Healthy Feets tips

Tip 1: Selection of shoes that fits well.
The first measures to be undertaken for preventive foot care is the selection of shoes, socks and stockings that fit well.  Wear the appropriate size footwear. Your toes should be able to wriggle comfortably in the shoes that you wear. Women are four times more likely to develop foot problems, due in part to the use of high heels, so avoid wearing them as much as possible or remove them at every opportunity to prevent sore feet. Put feet up whenever possible to keep the blood flowing and wriggle toes for up to 5 minutes, much like toe crunches. Footwear should be such that the feet are relaxed and have adequate ventilation that will prevent development of fungal infections.

Tip 2: Check your feet daily.
Check your feet daily with a 30-sec inspection to rule out any redness, discoloration, cracks, or other abnormalities. Never try to remove a corn, ingrown toenail or callus by yourself. Self-surgery gone wrong can be costly in terms of health and finances.

Tip 3: Wash feet daily.
Wash feet daily, rinse and dry thoroughly, especially between the toes. Remove rough skin gently by first soaking feet in warm water then gently scrubbing with a small towel or loofah, but scratch it if you are diabetic and you have a wound in your foot, soaking will make it worse. Indulge in feet massage as regularly as possible, and have a pedicure about once a week to keep toes pretty but make sure the implements used are clean.

Tip 4: Do not ignore pain.
Do not ignore pain. Identify the cause and eliminate it. If the pain persists, it is essential to consult your doctor for an adequate evaluation. Any disorder that affects feet extreme appendages can throw life out of gear considerably. Keep the area between the toes dry and check for peeling skin or unnatural moistness on a daily basis.

Tip 5: Trim your nails.
Trim your nails if necessary. Especially your big  toe. File them carefully so that they are smooth. Cutting nails should be undertaken after a bath or after soaking feet for some time to ease the process. Smooth the nail edges with the smoothing side of the nail file. Avoid digging out and cutting at corners; this could result to ingrown toe nails.

Tip 6: Massage your feet with petroleum jelly.
Massage your feet with petroleum jelly each night before bed and slip on a pair of thin socks to sleep in. The jelly provides a barrier for the skin, locking moisture in, and the socks protect your sheets from the jelly Vaseline and keep it from rubbing off.

Tip 7: Consult your physician before using any foot care products.

There are many foot care products, especially for athlete’s foot, tendinitis and calluses. For the last two, consult your physician before purchasing. In general, chemical preparations for the removal of calluses are not recommended.

Tip 8: Purchase socks that absorb sweat.
Purchase socks that absorb sweat away from the feet to keep from developing sores as well as fungal growth (athlete’s foot) and change socks every day. Foot powder can also be used to minimize sweating. Avoid hot or cold for your feet, and avoid the use of electric blankets and heating pads which may burn your feet inadvertently.

Tip 9: Regular or daily exercise.

Regular or daily exercise should also have a component of foot exercises. The 52 bones of a pair of feet are 25% of the body’s total number of bones. Together with 33 joints, 107 ligaments and 19 muscles of each foot, the feet absorb about five times the body weight in pressure every day.

Tip 10: General tips.
1.    Avoid exposing feet to extremes of temperature.
2.    If sitting for long periods of time, ensure that you move your feet and ankles frequently so as to keep the circulation active.
